John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(A) who takes away the sin of the world!(B) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(C) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(D) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(E) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(F) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[a](G)

  1. John 1:34 See Isaiah 42:1; many manuscripts is the Son of God.

Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb[a](A) for his family, one for each household.(B) If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect,(C) and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month,(D) when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.(E) Then they are to take some of the blood(F) and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night(G) they are to eat the meat roasted(H) over the fire, along with bitter herbs,(I) and bread made without yeast.(J) Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs.(K) 10 Do not leave any of it till morning;(L) if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste;(M) it is the Lord’s Passover.(N)

12 “On that same night I will pass through(O) Egypt and strike down(P) every firstborn(Q) of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods(R) of Egypt. I am the Lord.(S) 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over(T) you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.(U)

14 “This is a day you are to commemorate;(V) for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance.(W) 15 For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast.(X) On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off(Y) from Israel. 16 On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work(Z) at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.

17 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(AA) because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt.(AB) Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.(AC) 18 In the first month(AD) you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19 For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner(AE) or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off(AF) from the community of Israel. 20 Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live,(AG) you must eat unleavened bread.”(AH)

21 Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover(AI) lamb.

  1. Exodus 12:3 The Hebrew word can mean lamb or kid; also in verse 4.

Then I saw a Lamb,(A) looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures(B) and the elders.(C) The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,(D) which are the seven spirits[a](E) of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.(F) And when he had taken it, the four living creatures(G) and the twenty-four elders(H) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp(I) and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers(J) of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying:(K)

“You are worthy(L) to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood(M) you purchased(N) for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.(O)
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests(P) to serve our God,
and they will reign[b] on the earth.”(Q)

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.(R) They encircled the throne and the living creatures(S) and the elders.(T) 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb,(U) who was slain,(V)
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”(W)

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth(X) and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne(Y) and to the Lamb(Z)
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”(AA)

The Day of Atonement(A)

26 The Lord said to Moses, 27 “The tenth day of this seventh month(B) is the Day of Atonement.(C) Hold a sacred assembly(D) and deny yourselves,[a] and present a food offering to the Lord. 28 Do not do any work(E) on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. 29 Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people.(F) 30 I will destroy from among their people(G) anyone who does any work on that day. 31 You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance(H) for the generations to come, wherever you live. 32 It is a day of sabbath rest(I) for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”(J)
